How have you been inspired by the natural world to create works of art that reflect the beauty of nature? The show runs April 26 – June 28\, 2024\, and is open to all artists. We accept works from emerging\, mid-career\, and/or professional artists. \nAcceptable mediums include Acrylic\, Charcoal\, Collage\, Color Pencil\, Computer Art\, Digital Art\, Digital Photography\, Drawings\, Fiber Arts\, Glass Art\, Graphite\, Gouache\, Illustration\, Mixed Media\, New Media\, Oil\, Pastel\, Pen and Ink\, Printmaking\, Sculpture\, Studio Fine Crafts\, Traditional Photography\, or Watercolor and others. \nAll submissions must be family-friendly. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nUSING DESIGN\, COLOR & MOOD IN YOUR PAINTINGS\nwith June Dudley\nWe are welcoming renowned local artist\, June Dudley\, to share her expertise and her story with us at our March 11 meeting\, 6-7 pm at Degallery.  She will also be talking about her upcoming VAS workshop\, “Using Color & Design in the Landscape”  May 1-3\, 2024\, 9am-4pm.  Click on the link for more info and to register for the workshop.  Visit her website:  www.junedudley.com \n  \n        \n  \nAbout the Artist:   \nAs her dad’s cowhand\, June grew up on her family’s quintessential Texas ranch that has been in her family for over a hundred years and has been recognized by the state as a “Texas Century Ranch”.  She grew up riding horses and working cattle with her dad loving every minute of it.  She & her husband raised their family on that same land which has nurtured her passion for her art giving her the subjects she loves and paints.  Her paintings depict her sensitive sense of color plus the strong feelings she has for her subjects.  Her desire is to capture the subjects she paints with the passion she feels for them while creating a mood that the viewers share.  She loves painting Western landscapes and figurative pieces. \nHonored with many awards and a Jones Award recipient\, Dudley is published exclusively by Leanin’ Tree and Somerset Fine Art.  Major shows she has participated in include Small Works\, Great Wonders\, Hold Your Horses\, Trappings of Texas\, Traveling the West\, Windows to the West\, American Plains Artists\, Museum of Western Art\, Bosque Art Classic\, the Russell\, Cheyenne’s Governor’s Invitational\, Mountain Oyster Show\, one person shows At Greenhouse Gallery & Texas A&M\, & others.  Her art is in corporate collections of BNSF (Burlington\, Northwestern\, Santa Fe Railways)\, the Jones Gallery at Bosque Arts Center\, Coca Cola\, and Longhorn Steakhouse\, & many private collections.  She has done commissioned paintings for U.S. Equestrian Federation\, Australian Shepherd Club of America\, and Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix among others.  She is a lifetime committee member for Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.  She is represented by Marta Stafford Fine Art Gallery in Marble Falls\, Texas. \nHer many awards include the Jones Award\, Gold Award (judged by Oreland Joe)\, Best of Show\, & Popular Choice from the Bosque Art Classic; Best of Show\, Gold Award in Acrylics\, & Purchase Award at the San Dimas Festival of Arts judged by Alfredo Rodriquez\, Award of Excellence (APA Show) plus many others. \nJune has also judged many shows serving on the School Art steering committee for Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo for thirty years as well as judging many Texas art shows.  Major shows judged are National Society of Artists and the 2021 WOAW\, Women Artists of the West. \nDoors open at DEGALLERY at 5:30pm for our March meeting.  There will be light refreshments.  Come by a bit early\, chat and catch up!

DESCRIPTION:What is Encaustics?  How do I paint with wax?  Let’s take a look at the basics of this versatile medium.  It’s fascinating\, sometimes frustrating\, yet a lot of fun.  Below are examples of Jaimie’s take on this ancient technique practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th Century B.C.  See more HERE in her online exhibit\, Big Skies and Water Dreams. \n\n		\n		\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Winter Trees\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Morning in Tuscany\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Warm Italian Light\n				\n		\n\nTake a look at this YouTube video of the beauty of encaustics in action by artist Alicia Tormey. \nAbout the presenter\, Jaimie Ladysh: \n \nJaimie is a lens based interdisciplinary artist. Her work is rooted in place in a spiritual way within the natural world. Currently exploring digital with edited and some composited images\, she prints the images on special archival papers\, then further manipulates with hand-coloring\, painting\, and sometimes encaustics. The results are often described as ethereal. Whether representational or abstract\, she seeks the little mysteries found when light models on forms and color. \nJaimie has a long use photography of traditional film and silver gelatin\, Cyanotype\, Van Dyke\, Photograms\, photo manipulations\, infrared\, and other alternative processes. As a fine art major\, she began exploring hand tinting\, coloring\, and painting of photographs with oils\, pencils\, and water based media while at the university. She used 35 mm\, 2 1/4 x 21/4\, and toy cameras. \nHer work is archival; made with materials for longevity. She has been in many galleries\, press\, and venues. Pieces are in private\, public\, and corporate collections. All pieces are in limited editions of 10 or 15 in one or more sizes. \nJaimie was born in Ohio\, and has lived in a variety of places in many states and countries. She earned a BFA from University of Montana with a certificate to teach. SUMMARY:January 2024 Meeting:  Setting Up A Teaching Art Studio
DESCRIPTION:Many artists are venturing into setting up their own teaching studio\, in addition to creating art\, to augment their income.  Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt will be telling her story of starting Brazos Watercolor Retreats in 2019 with Monika Pate and Robyn Glass\, making it through covid and where BWR is today.  Included will be all the nitty-gritty about starting a small\, home-based business:  figuring out location\, name\, websites\, email\, finances\, insurance\, outfitting the place with lighting and furniture\, art supplies\, refreshments and advertising. She will also share a typical lesson.  So if you are interested in learning more\, please come! \nAbout the presenter\, Dr. Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt: \nBryan-College Station has been my home since I arrived from Watertown\, NY in 1975 to earn my Ph.D. in Oceanography.  It was here I graduated\, met and married my love (48 years+). I taught First Year Chemistry at Texas A&M University for 30 years & ran the Chemistry Open House for 13 years.  Teaching was my passion; I earned many awards including the prestigious Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence. I still tutor students in first year chemistry. I started watercolor as a complete novice in 2013 just before retiring\, taking local classes with Hailey Herrera\, Chris Wilson\, Robyn Glass and Monica Pate. In 2019\, Monica\, Robyn and I started “Brazos Watercolor Retreats” in my art studio\, but they moved on to other endeavors and now I continue to have monthly classes and give private lessons. I have been on the board of the Visual Art Society of Bryan-College Station for several years: 2016–2023 as treasurer\, and president/technology chair for 2023-2024. I also manage our Aggieland Art Trail project. This winter exhibition will be on display in the gallery at The Arts Council of Brazos Valley  January 10 or 11-February 9\, 2024\, and is open to all artists. Creating an excellent portfolio and pricing your pieces appropriately will mean you can keep doing what you love and\, better yet\, get paid for it! \nAbout the Presenter\, Dr. Daria Penionzhkevich Dega:\n\nPh.D.\, MAA\, MD\n\nHighly experienced manager\n\nBusiness owner of Award-Winning International Gallery and Art Studio DEGALLERY.\nAward-winning artist.\nFounder and director of non-for-profit art organization DEGA International Art Association.\n\nFor most children born in Russia\, a country with deep\, versatile history and tradition in the arts\, art is an important part of their childhood. For Dary Dega\, the owner of Aggieland’s newest destination for artists\, DEGALLERY\, it was no different. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Visual Art Society of B-CS has been involved with Brazos Valley Gives for the last 4 years.   You can visit our page at www.brazosvalleygives.org/Visual_Art_Society  On the page we have a fundraiser page for the Aggieland Art Trail.  All proceeds go toward all our community projects\, including scholarships for art students.  All donors giving at least $20 will be listed on our Sponsor webpage and on our Aggieland Art Trail brochure.  Early giving started September 18.  It is a wonderful event for the community. \nBrazos Valley Gives\, an initiative of the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley\, is a month-long community giving effort that culminates in 18 hours of online giving on the 3rd Tuesday of October. Giving together as one community to raise money and awareness for local nonprofits in 7 Brazos Valley counties can do a great deal. \n\nBrazos Valley Gives is a community day of giving that strengthens nonprofits\, empowers donors\, and builds community. The goal for 2023 Brazos Valley Gives is $1\,250\,000 with 165 participating nonprofit organizations. During 2022\, donors rallied to raise $1\,176\,760 and donated 9\,677 volunteer hours to support the good works of 161 nonprofit organizations. Since 2019\, the Community Foundation’s Brazos Valley Gives Day has raised $3\,268\,788 for participating nonprofits in the 7-county region of the Brazos Valley.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis annual day of “giving where you live” is powered by the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley\, and all donations pass-thru directly to the donor’s charity or charities of choice.

SUMMARY:Let's start at the beginning... a little felt and a little spinning!
DESCRIPTION:We have been using and manipulating fibers for millennia\, at least 100\,000 years and probably a lot longer.  Unfortunately\, this organic material doesn’t survive BUT just because we don’t see evidence of it doesn’t mean it didn’t exist or wasn’t used. I will introduce you to felt and to spinning yarn on a spindle and a spinning wheel. While I am spinning\, we can discuss the history of fiber\, felt and twisted cordage. We can also touch on the importance of these technological innovations to our artistic lives today and in the future. \nAbout the Presenter\, Helen Dewolf (in her own words) \n \nI am a tapestry weaver and fiber artist. My undergrad was in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo\, Waterloo\, Ontario in 1977. After working as a fiber artist for a few years (as well as other occupations) I came to grad school at TAMU in Anthropology/Nautical Archaeology in 1987 and graduated with a PhD in 1995. I was employed in the Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation in the Conservation Research Lab illustrating archaeological artifacts for publications and conserving artifacts. I retired as chief conservator in 2020. \nDuring the intervening years\, I have been weaving tapestries and producing fiber art pieces. I belong to the Brazos Spinners & Weavers Guild (BSWG) and INTERSECTIONS Textile Learning Center & Gallery (ITLC). SUMMARY:VAS “Art Together” & Photo Shoot\, Wednesday\, 9-20-23
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at Degallery\, Wednesday 9/20/23\, 1-4pm for another “Art Together.” \nAll members are welcome! If you are not a member\, you can join VAS HERE.  We would love to have you! \nBring your supplies\, your camera\, your computer\, whatever you use to do art and let’s have fun making art together.  We’ll chat\, share feedback on your current project and others as well. \nDo you want images of your art?  Bring them!  We are starting a money-raising venture for members only.  Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt will take high-resolution photos of your paintings\, just like she does for her own.  For each painting\, you will receive a ~24 MB image for making prints and uploading to websites like Fine Art America and a ~500-1000 kB image\, suitable for social media or online submission to a show  (or 2 sizes of your choosing).  The pricing (plus sales tax)  is $10 for 1 painting\, $16 for 2 paintings\, $21 for 3 paintings\, $24 for 4 paintings and $5 each for 5 paintings and up.  You would pay on the day by card\, check or cash.  Private access to the online images would be emailed to you. Let Wendy know if you need images but you are unable to come at this time at president@visualartsociety.org.

DESCRIPTION:Old School Rules! The Magic of Silver Gelatin Prints \nIf asked to name some famous artists who used photography as their medium\, what names come to mind? Ansel Adams? Edward Weston? Henri Cartier Bresson? Imogene Cunningham? Dorothea Lange? Margaret Bourke-White? These are all giants in the field who have their photographs in major art museums and private collections. All of them captured “decisive moments” and masterful images using technology and equipment that by today’s standards seems archaic\, or even primitive. Or is it? For many commercial photographers\, advanced digital cameras and powerful image-editing software are “must-haves\,” but many artistic photographers are still using film cameras to capture their images\, and even still printing in traditional “wet” darkrooms! Why? Come hear one photographer describe this mysterious and arcane process from start to finish; and discuss some of the advantages and trade-offs for doing things “the old-fashioned way.” \nAbout the Presenter\, Joel Kitchens (in this own words): \nAlthough I was born in Birmingham\, and grew up in small towns around northern Alabama\, I have lived in Texas since 1997\, and was on the faculty of Texas A&M University for nearly 25 years before retiring. \nAs a photographer\, I am largely self-taught. I did take an art photography class in college that taught the basics of black and white film photography (no digital in those days!). Today\, my photographic process remains traditional and purposely retro; from capturing images on black and white films in sizes from 35mm and 2 ¼ x 2 ¼\, to 4×5 inches (my favorite!)\, developing the film in a wet darkroom\, to printing the images on silver gelatin papers from the enlarged negatives. Each print is hand processed according to the Ilford archival sequence\, toned in selenium\, and mounted using acid-free materials for longevity. \nMy photography reflects a wide range of interests\, including historic sacred architecture\, landscapes and nature\, abstracts\, and still life. With my photographs\, I try to attract viewers’ interest by revealing the “spirit of place\,” as well as the interplay of light and shadow. I also try to show through my images that beauty\, serenity\, and tranquility are to be found all around us.
